A shriek of delight made Jeff jump as he negotiated the turn for the summer fair. He looked angrily over his shoulder and met innocent, wide-eyed joy. His expression eased and his heart melted like the tarmac cooking outside under the high diamond sun. Jeff could feel it sticking to the wheels like warm marmalade.
Megan had raced round the house in excitement when he had told her of the fair. Dancing and spinning like a six year old hurricane; she had eventually lost her head with the dizziness and fallen into the aspidistra that had silently watched the scene. Compost went everywhere.
They slid into a parking spot and he killed the engine. With it went the air-con. Immediately the heat began to creep through the car.
Taking a deep breath, he cracked the door: the blast furnace hit him full on and his face began to prickle. Fairs were cool as long as it WAS cool he thought and braved the inferno.
